What are lymphomas?

What type of lymphomas are treated with stem cell transplant or bone marrow transplant?

Patients with lymphoma are usually cured by using chemotherapy alone or combined modality therapy with external beam radiation. Lymphomas have excellent result with chemotherapy.

The aim of treatment in these situations will be to provide a long-term disease free state and cure.

Hodgkin lymphoma

High-grade non-Hodgkin lymphoma who have recurrent disease after their first course of treatment.

Some patients with high-grade non-Hodgkin lymphoma might be offered a stem cell transplant when they are in remission after their first course of treatment.

When are autologous stem cell transplants used in lymphoma treatment?

Small percentage of patients who do not get cured with chemotherapy those who experience recurrence after a initial cure are ideal candidate for high-dose chemotherapy therapy and autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (ASCT). Success of this approach is largely dependent on the tumor being sensitive to chemotherapy before transplant.Functional imaging is one technique being used to predict the outcome after stem cell transplant.

When are Allogeneic stem cell transplants used in lymphoma treatment?

to in this setting. Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation has greater risk of non relapse mortality and is generally reserved for patients who experience relapse post-ASCT, but may provide long-term survival for some patients through graft-versus-tumor immune effects.
