Rectal prolapse
pain, bleeding, mucous discharge, and incontinence. Physical examination can distinguish rectal prolapse (concentric mucosal rings) from prolapsing internal hemorrhoids (deep radial grooves). Risk factors include increased age, female gender, institutionalization, antipsychotic medication, previous hysterectomy, and spinal cord injury. Evaluation includes barium enema or colonoscopy to rule out malignancy and manometry and electromyography to determine sphincter function.
